New Relative and Justin's Cooking

Two bits of news.

First, I have a new relative, my cousin little Nora Jane:

Isn't she cute?

Second, Justin attempted to cook a meatloaf. The meatloaf probably would have turned out just fine except he forgot that the cake was in the oven in its little plastic cake holder. Needless to say, there was lots of smoke and it wasn't pretty:

The super had to use the fire extinguisher to put out the fire. I was sad:

Justin had to get the plastic off the oven shelf with pliers. At least the plastic didn't stick to the bottom of the stove since there was a nice build-up of grease.

Yale Shmale

So Lakehead University in Thunder Bay has unvieled a new ad campaign aimed at the Ivy Leagues:

Their website is here.

I actually think it is pretty funny, though universities rarely directly attack one another. Still, if the Ivy Leagues are going to let their degrees go to high bidders, then they deserve the derision. More importantly, it just proves that C students are pretty much the same everywhere, you just have to pay more at the Ivy Leagues. Going to one of those schools is for the social contacts, not necessarily for the education itself, especially at the undergrad level. Of course, sometimes the grad programs can be a little bad about it too, especially certain kinds of business, marketing, and journalism programs (and potentially others as well.)

Meanwhile, check out this video of a kilt blowing up in the wind... in slow motion!

Chicken Pox Salad on Pumpernickel

The FDA just approved the use of spray-on viruses for use on lunchmeats. The virus spray contains six bacteriophages that kill deadly listeria bacteria. Yum. Really makes me crave a pastrami on rye...

Story here.

The Islands

Last week, Justin and I had some visitors from New York City, his friend John and his girlfriend Christina. For some reason, we didn't manage to nab a pic of both of them on our camera, but here is a picture of John with Justin on the Big Rock in Cumberland Park in Yorkville, downtown Toronto.

We decided to go to the Islands off the shore in Lake Ontario. We took the ferry across.

The Islands have a small amusement park, regular parks, beaches, and biking/walking paths. They are actually very beautiful and once you get away from the main tourist areas, they are extremely serene.

Oh, Canada!

And not the Oh! Canada from the song... more of an orgasmic "Oohaa, Canada!!" to express how I feel about being home again. Okay, perhaps that image was a bit too visceral for you kids out there.

So, I'm back, and I've got a cold. Yay. Nothing better than being hot AND having a cold. The cold mostly seems to be restricted to my right nostril, which I have to blow every three seconds or so. The woolies are happy being home and I've been trying to clean up the place. I got rid of a bunch of old clothes and put away all of the stuff I hauled back from the States (all valued under $50/US, officially).

While you are all taking comfort in my return to the Great White North, check out me pal's Swell Blog. He knows cripe-tons about movies. Me, I sit there and think, "Look at the pretty moving pictures! Oh, and there's sound!"
