Not Dead, Just Reading

Sadly, I do not have time for flippant jocularity for my adoring fans. However, I do want everyone to know that I am still alive.

Since Christmas, I have been studying for my horrifying comprehensive exam for the PhD program in Art History here at the University of Toronto. The first day is an in-class exam stretching over 7 hours. The first three hours you answer one question, then lunch, then the second question. To be fair, you do get your choice of three questions per session. Directly after that begins the 72-hour take home question, for which you need to write 20 pages with full citations. A few days after turning that in, you're in for a 2-hour oral exam.

I'm exhausted, I'm grouchy, I am afraid... but hopefully I'll be back after March 26, and hopefully, in a very good mood!

Hang in there supersmartlady! If there's anyone I know who can handle all that, it's you. I'll also try to put in a good word with the art history deities for you. I've been talking to (aka beseeching) them a lot lately concerning my own work, let's hope they're listening. =)

P.S. Please tell me they give you a wiggly puppy and/or an all-expenses paid vacation along with your PhD. After putting you through all of that, it's the least they could do!

Yesterday, I spent like three hours playing SimCity4000. It's fun being mayor.

In all seriousness, kick ass on those comps, you academic go-getter!

Sadly, all I get at the end of it all is a funny hat, long out-of-fashion robe, and a piece of paper. The piece of paper is the only part that is free.

I was actually looking at the doctoral robes for the University of Toronto. They are a bit much, with lots of trim and crimson and a hood, and good grief. And I was thinking, "I have to walk around in THAT?!" Note: choose your doctoral program based on the funny outfit. After all, you're stuck with that outfit forever! They'll bury you in it and then archaeologists of the future will laugh at you and put you in the British Museum.
